Everyone learns at their own pace. The DVSA recommends approximately 45 hours with an instructor and 20 hours of private practice, but many pupils are test-ready much sooner, while others may require more instruction time.
There’s no set timeline, so it’s best not to compare or set fixed expectations. What matters most is building skill and confidence at a pace that suits you.

‘Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
2. Around 40 minutes of driving, including:
General driving
1. One reversing manoeuvre
2. Possibly an emergency stop
3. 20 minutes of independent driving using a sat nav or road signs
You’ll pass if you make no serious or dangerous faults and fewer than 15 minor faults.
