Everyone learns at their own pace. The DVSA recommends approximately 45 hours with an instructor and 20 hours of private practice, but many pupils are test-ready much sooner, while others may require more instruction time.

The theory test has two parts:

1. Multiple-choice section (50 questions, pass mark is 43)

2. Hazard perception section (video clips, pass mark is 44 out of 75)

You must pass both parts in one sitting to get your theory test certificate.

You need a valid UK provisional driving licence. You must also be at least 17 years old (or 16 if receiving certain disability benefits).

You’re ready when you can drive safely and independently, with consistent control, awareness, and decision-making. Your instructor will advise you when they believe you are test-ready.

1. Eyesight check (read a number plate from 20 metres)

‘Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions

2. Around 40 minutes of driving, including:

General driving

1. One reversing manoeuvre

2. Possibly an emergency stop

3. 20 minutes of independent driving using a sat nav or road signs
